Section outline

  • Setting up Courses in the LMS

  • In this section, you will learn the steps on how to create a course.

    • What is a course?

A course is an area where a teacher will add resources and activities for their students to complete. It might be a simple page with downloadable documents or it might be a complex set of tasks where learning progresses through interaction.

  • In this section, you will learn the steps on how to add activities or resources.

    • What are Activities and Resources?

An activity is a general name for a group of features in a course. Usually an activity is something that a student will do that interacts with other students and or the teacher. Examples of activities are:
        • Assignment
        • Forum
        • H5P
        • Quiz
        • Scorm
Meanwhile, a resource is an item that a teacher can use to support learning, such as a file or link. More examples of resources are:
        • Book
        • File
        • Page

  • In this section, you will learn the different types of resources.

    • What is a Book/eBook?

Multi-page resources with a book-like format. Books allow teachers to create multi-page resources with a book-like format and table of contents. Multimedia may be embedded and books may be printed entirely or by chapter.

You may watch the video below to further understand Book/eBook.

    • What is a File?

A picture, a pdf document, a spreadsheet, a sound file, a video file. Files are not just materials such as word-processed documents or slideshow presentations. All types of files can be uploaded and accessed through Moodle, but the student needs to have the correct software to be able to open them. Different file types are shown with different icons. Files may be added in two ways: They may dragged and dropped directly onto the course page

You may watch the video below to further understand File.

    • What is a Folder?

For helping organize files and one folder may contain other folders. he folder allows a teacher to display several course files together. The files may be of different types and they may be uploaded in one go, as a zipped folder which is then unzipped, or they may be added one at a time to an empty folder on the course page.

You may watch the video below to further understand Folder.

    • What is a Page?

The student sees a single, scrollable screen that a teacher creates with the robust HTML editor. A page resource creates a link to a screen that displays the content created by the teacher. The Text editor allows the page to display many different kinds of content such as plain text, images, audio, video, embedded code or a combination of all these. Pages are more accessible than uploading word-processed documents, particularly if the document just contains text to be read and not downloaded.

You may watch the video below to further understand Page.

    • What is an Assignment?

Enable teachers to grade and give comments on uploaded files and assignments created on and off line. Assignments allow students to submit work to their teacher for grading. The work may be text typed online or uploaded files of any type the teacher’s device can read. Grading may be by simple percentages or custom scales, or more complex rubrics may be used. Students may submit as individuals or in groups.

You may watch the video below to further understand Assignment.

    • What is a Quiz?

Allows the teacher to design and set quiz tests, which may be automatically marked and feedback and/or to correct answers shown. The Quiz is a very powerful activity that can meet many teaching needs, from simple, multiple-choice knowledge tests to complex, self-assessment tasks with detailed feedback. Questions are created and stored separately in a Question bank and can be reused in different quizzes. When creating a Quiz you can either make the questions first and add them to the Quiz, or add a Quiz activity (as below) and create the questions as you go along.

You may watch the video below to further understand Quiz.

    • What is an Attendance?

The Attendance activity is designed for teachers to be able to take attendance during class, and for students to be able to view their own attendance record. A teacher can mark the attendance status of a student as "Present", "Absent", "Late", or "Excused". These status descriptions are configurable, and more can be added. The teacher adds Attendance as an activity of a course, and then sets up the sessions for which attendance is to be tracked. The Attendance activity can generate reports for either the entire class or for individual students. Students may also see their own attendance record if the activity is not hidden. The optional Attendance block allows teachers quick access to the Attendance functionality, and allows students quick access to a summary report for their own attendance.

    • What is BigBlueButton?

Run live video conferencing sessions within the LMS. BigBlueButton lets you create from within Moodle links to real-time on-line classrooms using BigBlueButton, an open source web conferencing system for distance education. You can specify conference times, which are then added to the calendar, and, if allowed in your installation, the sessions may be recorded for viewing later.

You may watch the video below to further understand BigBlueButton.

    • What is a Checklist?

Allows a teacher to create a checklist / todo list / task list for their students to work through. The teacher can monitor all the students' progress, as they tick off each of the items in the list. Items can be indented and marked as optional. Students are presented with a simple bar showing how far they have progressed through the required/optional items and can add their own, private, items to the list.

    • What is a SCORM?

The SCORM activity allows teachers to upload any SCORM or AICC package to a course. SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a collection of specifications that enable interoperability, accessibility and re-usability of web-based learning content.

    • What is Survey?

Used for gathering data from students to help teachers learn about their class and reflect on their own teaching. The Survey activity offers a number of verified survey instruments, including COLLES (Constructivist On-Line Learning Environment Survey) and ATTLS (Attitudes to Thinking and Learning Survey), which have been found useful in assessing and stimulating learning in online environments. Teachers can use these to gather data from their students that will help them learn about their class and reflect on their own teaching.
